Dollar General to Build 12th Distribution Center in Bethel Township, Pa.
Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) announced plans to build a distribution center in Bethel Township, in Berks County, Pa. It will be the 12th facility in the retailer’s growing distribution network.
Pending completion of due diligence, receipt of all required governmental permits and development approvals, and the purchase of the land upon which the facility will be constructed, the company plans to build a 900,000+ square-foot facility on 109 acres at Interstate 78 and State Route 501.
“This distribution center is an investment in the growth of our company, as well as the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Bethel Township,” said Rick Dreiling, Chairman and CEO of Dollar General. “Dollar General opened its first store in the Keystone state in 1974, and we are proud to have contributed to its economic growth by creating jobs for nearly four decades.”
The total cost for the distribution center, including equipment and fixtures, is expected to reach approximately $100 million. At full capacity, the Dollar General facility will likely employ more than 500 people to serve more than 1,000 stores in the northeast. Additionally, Dollar General’s third-party transportation provider expects to employ 75 drivers. Dollar General plans to start construction this fall, and begin hiring in the fall of 2013.
“Dollar General’s decision to open a new distribution center in Pennsylvania is a testament to Governor Corbett’s commitment to pro job growth policies and the quality work force here in Berks County,” said Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary C. Alan Walker. “The Corbett administration’s goals are fairly simple. We want our state to be sound fiscally and we want a job for everyone who seeks one. Dollar General will be adding over 500 jobs to the region.”
Dollar General has 440 stores in Pennsylvania.
Dollar General’s other distribution centers are located in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Virginia, Mississippi, Missouri, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina, Indiana, Alabama and California.
